Missing man found dead in South Meriden

MERIDEN — Police suspect a local man found dead in the woods near his South Meriden home Thursday night may have fallen down an embankment. Foul play is not suspected.

Thomas Benarro, 55, of 144 Jepson Lane, was last seen at his home one week ago. Police issued an alert Monday.

Lt. Sal Nesci, police spokesman, said that city police, working with state police and search dogs, found Benarro’s body in a wooded area about a quarter mile from his home at about 6 p.m.

“We were hoping for a better outcome,” Nesci said. “No one wants to see a case resolved like this. Our sympathies go out to the family.”

In a statement, Benarro’s family said he “enjoyed listening to his extensive record collection, especially the Beatles, watching Red Sox and Patriots games, playing his guitar, taking van trips with his pals at the Friendship Club, and caring for his beloved cat Buddy.”

The medical examiner will perform an autopsy, Nesci said. As of Friday, exact information on the cause of death was pending.

An officer who filed the initial missing person’s report noted that Benarro was “quiet and stayed to himself.” It was unusual for him to wander off, Nesci said.
