Meriden police engage in pursuit after cruiser struck, suspect not caught

MERIDEN — Police officers were involved in a car chase Thursday night after police say a car reported to be driving recklessly smashed into a police cruiser.

Police spokesman Sgt. Darrin McKay said police received a report of a vehicle driving recklessly in the area of West Main Street and Chamberlain Highway shortly after 5:30 p.m. An officer spotted a vehicle matching the description shortly parked at a gas station on the corner of Chamberlain Highway and Pasco Street.

When the officer approached the car in his cruiser, McKay said the driver smashed into the police car and took off. McKay said the officer pursued the car but remained under 40 mph throughout the duration of the chase. Multiple police officers attempted to track down the fleeing car, McKay said, which was driving and turning down various side streets.

When officers approached the area of Lincoln Middle School, McKay said it was clear a function was being held with numerous cars parked outside and people walking around. Concerned about public safety, McKay said officers opted to end the pursuit rather than risk injuring anybody.

McKay said the department is continuing to investigate the situation. The cruiser that was struck only had minor damage, he noted, and it will remain in operation for the time being.
