NEW BRITAIN — A Meriden man charged in the shooting death of a teen had his case placed on the trial list in court on Thursday.
Jonathan Gibbs, 26, of Meriden, was arrested on June 17 and charged with the sole count of murder. Gibbs is represented by Attorney Norm Pattis, and on a previous court date in August Pattis entered a not guilty plea on behalf of his client.
There is no set date for when jury selection in the trial will begin, according to the criminal clerk’s office. Gibbs is being held in lieu of $3 million bail.
According to police reports, on June 16 around midnight police were called to Kelsey Street for a report of a man with a gunshot wound. Police found Issaac Smith, 18, of New Britain, with a gunshot wound to the back of his head, the report said. Smith was taken to the Hospital of Central Connecticut, where he was pronounced dead, the report said.
Police developed Gibbs as a suspect, and when officers spoke with him, Gibbs told police he was selling a pair of sneakers for $400 on Facebook and was meeting up with Smith that night to make the sale.
When the men met in New Britain, Gibbs told police Smith grabbed the sneakers, implied he had a gun and ran away, the report said.
Gibbs grabbed his handgun from his truck, chased after Smith and fired a shot “in the direction of Smith,” the report said.
Pattis said during a hearing in August that Gibb’s uncle, Terry Gibbs, was responsible for the shooting, and Jonathan Gibbs was trying to cover for his uncle and lied to police.
Terry Gibbs was arrested on July 17 and charged with 17 counts of illegal possession of a firearm and one count of risk of injury to a minor. His case was transferred to New Britain Superior Court and continued until Jan. 7, 2014.
