Councilors Battista, Lowell plan new television show

MERIDEN — Two city councilors plan to launch a television program that will give residents a look inside the workings of local government, including construction projects.

The show, “Positively Meriden,” is planned to debut soon and will air on government access television, hosted by Councilors Cathy Battista and David Lowell. The Democratic duo have been planning the show, designed to replace former Mayor Michael S. Rohde’s “The Mayor’s Mic,” since Rohde lost his re-election bid in November.

“We thought it would be cool to do a show and we’re always looking for a new idea,” Battista said. “We just want to show different kinds of things that the public generally doesn’t know or hear about.”

Battista said the idea was developed before Mayor Manny Santos, a Republican, began planning his own TV show. Not wanting to step on any toes, Battista said she spoke with Santos and they agreed to go forward with two shows. Having done some research, Battista said it is common in other communities for there to be multiple government-related programs on the government access channel.

Santos’ show, “Our Meriden with Mayor Manny Santos” is focused on highlighting some city departments to give residents a better understanding of how they function, a closer look at municipal boards and commissions and meeting with some local businesses. “Positively Meriden,” Battista said, will show residents how a City Council resolution is developed, provide tours of local projects and buildings and a look at various neighborhoods.

“It should be good for Meriden,” Battista said.

Lowell said he is excited about the program and anxious to get it started.

“We’re just looking to highlight many of the different things happening across the city,” Lowell said. “From our parks and civic groups to construction projects going on with status reports, the renaming of the Hub ... so hopefully we can interview some people and take people behind the scenes.”

The show is expected to air in the coming weeks on Cox Communications’ government access Channel 14 or AT&T U-verse Channel 99.
