Pedestrian struck after vehicles collide on West Main in Meriden

MERIDEN — A pedestrian was hit by a van on West Main Street near Benjamin Franklin School Thursday afternoon.

The van and a sports sedan were traveling in opposite directions on West Main near Chamberlain Highway at about 3 p.m. when the vehicles collided and the van hit a pedestrian, said Meriden police Lt. Salvatore Nesci. The van was heading west and veered into the oncoming lane.

Both drivers and the pedestrian were taken to hospitals with minor injuries, Nesci said. The road was shut for about 45 minutes.

Two city residents said they witnessed the crash. Karen Coronado was returning home from work, traveling east on West Main, when she saw the van careen into the sedan and pedestrian. It then jumped the sidewalk on the eastbound side and took out the white picket fence in front of a historical building next to the school, she said.

Laura Krueger, who was across the street in the Walgreen’s parking lot, said the van “went airborne,”after driving over the curb and nearly knocked down a telephone pole, she said.

The incident happened just as Franklin students were being dismissed, Krueger said.

Nesci said the accident is still under investigation. Anyone with any information is asked to call Officer Donna Zurstadt at (203) 630 6201.
