New Britain man arraigned on rape charge in Meriden

MERIDEN — A New Britain was arraigned Monday on sexual assault charges from a reported incident on New Year’s Eve.

Jose Diaz, 18, of 22 Day Street, was arrested Friday and charged with first-degree sexual assault and unlawful restraint.

According to police, an 18-year-old woman reported on Jan. 22 that she had been sexually assaulted on Dec. 31. The woman said she was staying at a relative’s house in Meriden for the holiday and had been drinking alcohol with a family member. Diaz was also at the home drinking with the woman, police said. The woman fell asleep on the couch and awoke to Diaz holding her down. She told Diaz to stop, according to the arrest warrant, but police say he sexually assaulted her.

Diaz denied sexually assaulting the woman and has no criminal record, police said. He was released on $100,000 bail. A full protective order was issued barring contact with the alleged victim. The case was transferred to New Haven Superior Court, where Diaz is scheduled to appear May 27.
