Arc of Meriden-Wallingford to host high tea Saturday

MERIDEN — The Arc of Meriden-Wallingford is hosting a fundraiser this weekend, one that’s very different from its annual motorcycle ride.

The organization, which provides services for people with intellectual disabilities, is hosting a high tea on Saturday, featuring a “reverse strip-tease,” by The Victorian Lady, Kandie Carle. The East Haddam native adds layer after layer of clothing to create an outfit that a typical Victorian woman might have worn.

According to Carle’s website, the actress shares information and insight into the clothing, lifestyle, manners, and etiquette of Victorian men, women, and children during the performance.

“She’ll put on her corset, the petticoats; the kind of clothing that we would have worn if we lived during that time,” said organizer Pam Lawrence.

Tea and baked goods, such as scones and pastries, made at Arc will be served.

Lawrence urged those who attend to wear formal clothes, including hats and gloves.

Kelly Dorsey, a peer advocate for the organization, said gloves will be provided.

So far, about 50 tickets have been sold, Lawrence said, with a maximum capacity of 120 people.

Proceeds from the event will go toward funding Arc’s numerous services, including day programs, external jobs programs, the Arc Eatery, and an aquaponics program in which Arc employees grow crops and fish in water-filled tanks.

The high tea will start at 2 p.m. at the Augusta Curtis Cultural Center, 175 East Main St., on Saturday, May 17. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased by calling Lawrence at (203) 238-8360.

“We wanted to do something nice for the community, and this is a really different event,” Dorsey said.
