MERIDEN – A Cheshire man charged with firing gunshots at the Meriden police parking lot last year is due to appear in Meriden Superior Court later this month.
Michael Merrigan Jr., 23, was charged earlier this week with first-degree criminal mischief, operating a drug factory, possession of narcotics, possession with intent to sell, possession of drugs in a prohibitive place, two counts of marijuana possession, possession of drug paraphernalia and failure to have a pistol permit. According to court documents, Michael Merrigan Jr. is the son of two retired city police officers, Janice Merrigan and Michael Merrigan Sr.
On May 23, 2013, witnesses heard multiple gunshots fired outside the Police Department on Hanover Street. The rounds struck a police vehicle, said Sgt. Darrin McKay. Merrigan’s motive for the shooting was hostility against the police and his father, according to court documents.
A search of a condominium in Middletown occupied by Michael Merrigan Jr. resulted in the discovery of a drug factory and evidence of drug distribution, according to court documents. He was released on $250,000 bail. He is scheduled to appear in court on June 24.
