Driver still hospitalized following Meriden accident

MERIDEN — One of the drivers in an accident near the corner of Summer and Spring streets Monday morning remained hospitalized Tuesday with a serious foot injury.

Maryanne Richards, 64, of Meriden, was taken to Hartford Hospital following the two-vehicle crash. Hospital staff confirmed she was still undergoing treatment Tuesday but would not release her condition. The driver of the other vehicle, Luz Ortiz, 54, also of Meriden, was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital with minor injuries and discharged.

Richards was driving east on Summer Street in a red Hyundai Sonata at around 10:44 a.m. when she was struck by Ortiz driving west in a red 1999 Toyota Forerunner, according to a statement from police Lt. Thomas Cossette.

Police say Ortiz was trying to turn left onto Spring Street when she struck Richards’ car. The accident caused heavy damage to both vehicles. Police are still investigating.

Witnesses are asked to contact Officer Chris Rodriguez or Cossette at (203) 630-6201.
