AARP 4943 meeting

The Southington Apple Valley Chapter AARP 4943 will host its next meeting at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24, at Mary our Queen Church, 238 Savage St. The meeting is open to all national AARP members and guests who might be interested in joining this chapter. Entertainment will follow the business meeting. Members are reminded to bring non-perishable food items for Community Services. Also comfort items for the men and women serving our country.

Art exhibit

Ballroom, Latin, and swing dance lessons

The Southington Recreation Department is offering beginner and intermediate Ballroom, Latin and Swing dance lessons. A total of eight classes will take place at Plantsville Elementary School, 70 Church St., in the cafeteria, from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays now through Nov. 15. A fee is charged per couple. Festival of trees

United Way of Southington will present its annual Festival of Trees Traditions from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, at the Aqua Turf, 556 Mulberry St. This event features donated decorated trees from individuals and organizations that are available during the auction session. Dozens of trees and other holiday items will be featured along with Aqua-Turf food, a silent auction and wine raffle. There is a fee for admission. The Town of Southington Veterans Committee is keeping a data base of all U.S. Military Veterans that joined the military as residents of Southington. If you joined the military from another Town or State you are not eligible.

Volunteer drivers needed

Senior Transportation Services, Inc., a nonprofit transportation service for citizens age 55 and older, needs volunteer drivers willing to commit to two hours a week of transporting seniors to out-of-town medical appointments. Two session on the the Ins and Outs of applying for College

SOUTHINGTON — Applying for college can be stressful and difficult to understand. On Monday, Oct. 23, Shannon Duffy will give a free seminar for students and parents on how to successfully navigate the complex process.

This free seminar will begin at 5:30 p.m. and focus on what colleges are looking for in an applicant, factors to consider when deciding where to apply.

Understanding College Financial Aid – will take place at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 7. Jennifer Philips, former assistant director of financial aid at Fairfield University, will share tips on how you can get the best financial aid package. There will be a question and answer period following the program.

Annual Italian Night dinner

Mary our Queen Church will host its annual Italian night dinner at 6:15 p.m. Saturday,Oct. 28, at the church hall on Savage Street. Menu will consist of lasagna and meatballs, eggplant parmigiana, Italian bread, dessert, beverages. Tickets will be on sale after all Masses Oct. 21 and 22. Or call Vin and Gloria at 860-276-0654. Youth Basketball

Registration for Youth Basketball’s 2017-18 season will be accepted online only from now until Oct. 31. This program is open to Southington resident boys and girls in grades 1-12. Visit for further information or to register.

Healthy Food, Healthy Kids

SOUTHINGTON — The Southington Public Library will offer a program at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 1, to learn how to feed your baby the most nutritious food to help them grow healthy and strong. Marisa McCoy, a registered dietitian, will demonstrate how to make sure your little one is eating food filled with healthy, affordable ingredients by making it yourself. Registration is required. Arts and crafts classes

The Southington Recreation Department will offer Arts & Crafts classes for individuals with special needs (they must be accompanied by an adult). A total of eight classes will take place in the Derynoski Elementary School Cafeteria. For more information, call 860-276-6217.

Dog obedience classes

The Southington Recreation Department will offer Dog Obedience classes at Stay N Play Pets, 420 North Main St. The instructor is Kevin Medeiros. Beginner level training will occur on Saturdays, Nov. 11 - Dec. 23, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.; intermediate level Wednesdays, Nov. 8 - Dec. 20, from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Beginner level participants are asked to attend their first class without their dogs. Dementia program at the library

Hope Full Lives: community talks at the Southington Public Library, presented by the Alzheimer’s Resource Center, Wednesday, Oct. 25 at 6 p.m. A series of three free discussions at the Library focusing on concerns and issues related to dementia. Pasta supper

Boy Scout Troop 17 is planning a pasta supper for Saturday, Oct. 21, from 4 to 7 p.m., at First Baptist Church of Southington, 581 Meriden Ave. The meal will include pasta, salad, bread, dessert and beverages. Genealogy Program

The Southington Genealogical Society is sponsoring a genealogy program by Greenwich resident Janeen Bjork entitled “Explore Connecticut Newspapers for Genealogy” at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24, at The Orchards, 34 Hobart St. TV researcher Janeen Bjork will show you where and how to find CT newspapers online. There is no admission charge and no obligation to become a member. No reservations are necessary. The facility is handicapped accessible with an elevator. Southington UNICO Hosts Italian Dinner Party

Southington UNICO hosts its annual Fall Italian Dinner Party at 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 6, at Testa’s Banquet Facility, 26 S. Center St. Tickets include a stuffed porchetta meal with wine, pasta fagioli, antipasto, ziti with meatballs, suffritto and salad. A cash bar will also be provided.

Bus trip

Youth Wrestling

Registration for the 2017-2018 season of Youth Wrestling will be accepted at the Recreation Department throughout the month of October.
