BERLIN — A local man faces narcotics charges after police seized about $14,000 worth of marijuana and psilocybin mushrooms from his home.

Charles Matlack, 27, of 27 Magnolia Lane, was charged with operating a drug factory, illegal sale and distribution of a hallucinogenic substance, possession of more than four ounces of marijuana, and sale of narcotics within 1,500 feet of a school or daycare.

According to Superintendent of Schools David Erwin, Matlack was a substitute teacher in Berlin schools. He last taught in Berlin in May.

Police began investigating the cultivation and sale of marijuana and psilocybin mushrooms at a residence earlier this summer, Lt. Christopher Ciuci said in a statement.

On Sept. 13, authorities executed a search and seizure warrant at 27 Magnolia Lane. Police seized 3.75 pounds of marijuana, 16 grams of psilocybin mushrooms, 1 gram of marijuana wax, suboxone films, scales and almost $800 cash, Ciuci said.

Officers also seized psilocybin mushroom spores, items used to grow mushrooms and four guns, Ciuci said.

The narcotics were valued between $13,400 and $15,850.
