MERIDEN — Lucille Janatka, Hartford HealthCare regional president and former MidState Medical Center CEO, will retire at the end of the year.

Janatka, a Woodbury resident, will be replaced by Gary Havican, who will oversee Midstate Medical Center and the Hospital of Central Connecticut, headquartered in New Britain. In 2013, Janatka became head of the Hospital of Central Connecticut as part of a consolidation effort. The Hospital of Central Connecticut also has a campus in Southington.

“Four years ago HHC created a regional structure, and since then we have been on a path to improve the quality and coordination of care our patients receive,” according to a letter to Hartford HealthCare workers by Elliot Joseph, chief operation officer and Jeffrey A. Flacks, chief operating officer. “We feel blessed to have such a reservoir of leadership to call upon as our organization matures and advances toward our vision.”

In a letter to colleagues, Janatka said she’s had the good fortune to work with a host of dedicated people during her years with Hartford HealthCare. She also spoke highly of Havican, who is vice president of operations.

“He has proven himself to be a committed, collaborative leader — and I know he is absolutely ready for this next phase of his career,” she wrote. “I have thoroughly enjoyed working with Gary, watching him get to know our region and its people, and I look forward to ensuring a smooth transition over the next few months.”

A host of other promotions follow Janatka’s retirement, some of which will go into effect Oct. 1.

Janatka left Meriden in 1990 to become vice president of administration at Greenwich Hospital. Before going to Waterbury Hospital in 1995, she was vice president for operations at the Hospital of Saint Raphael in New Haven.

Janatka began her career in nursing. She has a master’s degree in nursing from Boston College and served as assistant director of nursing at Roger Williams Hospital in Providence and at St. Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury.

She left Waterbury Hospital in 1999 to lead MidState Medical Center. At the time, the hospital on Lewis Avenue was about a year old.
