WALLINGFORD — Hertz Rent-A-Car is coming to South Broad Street.
Town Planner Kacie Costello said the rental company received “administrative approval” on July 29 for its application to take over the storefront previously occupied by DirecTV in the shopping plaza at 1211 S. Broad St.
When a business applies to move into a space previously used by another business it is considered a “change of use application,” Costello said, and does not require rezoning or a public hearing.
If Hertz planned to make significant alterations to the site, it would have to submit a new site plan, seek additional approvals, and possibly go through a public hearing, Costello said.
However, the site plan for the property does not have to be modified, Costello said, since Hertz is not seeking to make significant changes, such as adding parking spaces.
Costello said the site plan allots 16 parking spaces to Hertz for its own use, although the company has said only an average of five to 10 spaces will be occupied at one time by vehicles from its rental fleet.
Costello said she did not know when the new Hertz branch planned to open.
Business Recruiter Doreen De Sarro welcomed the car rental agency to town. “We’re always happy when a new business opens in Wallingford,” De Sarro said. “And they’ll be bringing jobs here.”
