Garden center opens in Wallingford

WALLINGFORD — A Madison-based garden center has moved into the outdoor area of the former Vinny’s Home & Garden Center on South Colony Road.

Village Greene Gardens opened at 1076 S. Colony Road (Route 5) earlier this month, said assistant manager Jeff Landon. Vinny’s closed after the roof collapsed during the February blizzard. Shattered glass remains scattered on the floor of the building.

“It’s kind of sad what happened to Vinny’s, but we got a good offer here and are trying to broaden our horizons,” Landon said.

Landon said the business has a month-to-month lease with the property owner. Village Greene Gardens also has branches in Madison and Guilford.

Doreen DeSarro, business recruiter for the town’s Economic Development Commission, said she believes residents will be glad to see another gardening center occupying the site.

“A lot of people used to go to Vinny’s and may be missing the fact that the garden center isn’t there,” she said.

When asked if Village Greene Gardens will eventually move into the building, Landon said first it would have to be cleaned and repaired.

A sign behind the cash register stated “we do not have access to the inside of the building and do not know what they are doing with the property or any of the contents.”
