CHESHIRE — A large tree fell on wires on Academy Road Thursday evening, prompting authorities to shut down a portion of the road. Nearly 300 were without power.

About 4:52 p.m., emergency crews responded to a reported house fire on Academy Road. It was later determined that the house fire report, from a neighbor, stemmed from arcing wires on the road caused by a fallen branches. A tree fell in the area of 205 Academy Road and police shut down the road. Eversource Energy responded. As of 6:40 p.m., the road remained closed, and police said crews were devising a plan to fix the damaged wires.

About the same time, a fire alarm was reported at a house on South Main Street, as well as the community pool, also off South Main Street. Both were determined to be false alarms.

The road was reoponed around 9:30 p.m., police said.
