CHESHIRE — A Vietnamese and Thai restaurant is set to open next week in a historic downtown building that once housed Cliff’s Pizza.

Pho & Spice, 15 S. Main St., is the second restaurant in the state for Sumon Suwan, who owns another Pho & Spice in downtown New Haven. Suwan also owns a Thai and Vietnamese restaurant in the Boston area.

“This is very similar to the New Haven restaurant,” Suwan said. “I have a good business in New Haven and there is no food like that here. I like this town, I wanted this location.”

The building is owned by John Weinstein of JMB Property LLC, who bought it in January for almost $500,000. Constructed in 1900, the building housed Cliff’s Pizza for almost 40 years, from 1965 until 2002. There are 37 parking spaces in the rear.

More recently, Bann Thai was housed in the building but relocated to Bristol.

Weinstein is a fan of Suwan’s food and will host a ribbon cutting in the coming weeks for the restaurant and upstairs offices.

“I am very confident of Suwan,” Weinstein said. “He has a very successful history. Try the Tom Yum soup. His is the best.”

Weinstein made about $200,000 worth of improvements to the building, including new furnaces, electrical updates and window restoration. The 11 rooms upstairs have been converted into seven offices available for lease.

Weinstein owns a travel business in Hamden, but also restores buildings.

Current tenants in the building include Kumon, a learning center, and Miranda, a tailor shop.

Pho & Spice is intended to be upscale and features a large variety of appetizers, including scallion pan cake and Pho & Spice special short ribs, soups, salads, Ramen dishes, seafood, beef, chicken and duck entrees. There is also a full lunch menu and Vietnamese coffee, teas and cold beverages. Take out, catering and delivery are also available.

Economic Development Coordinator Jerry Sitko said Pho & Spice follows a hibachi restaurant opening in Maplecroft Plaza and the planned expansion of Viron Rondo Osteria.

“It’s good for Cheshire to have two new restaurants in town,” Sitko said.
