The Southington Knights of Columbus will sponsor its 2017 Soccer Challenge event from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 24, at the Southington Rec Park Soccer Field 1 on South End Road.

How the soccer challenge is played: registration is a rolling style and will start at 9 a.m. and run till 11 a.m.. Registration by 11 a.m. does not guarantee participation, so arrive early. Competition is set up by gender groups so they will compete with those of their own age. The competition itself is based on penalty kicks with each player having 15 shots on goal. Scoring based on the diagram on a prescribed set of diverse approaches to the goal. Kids have fun and are quick to understand the rules. The games are played on field 1, lower field, at Recreation Park.

Competition is open to boys and girls residing in the Southington, Plantsville, Milldale and Marion areas, born between Sept. 1, 2003, and Sept. 1, 2008, with division of players based on gender and age from 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14-year-olds. Eligible kids play free.
