Calvin Johnson, musician and founder of the legendary independent label K Records joined “On The Record: Music” to talk about his upcoming show at The Outer Space in Hamden on Friday.

K, formed in 1982, helped bring the underground rock scene to national prominence from its home in Olympia, Washington. The label has released albums by Built to Spill, Bikini Kill, Beck, The Blow, Kimya Dawson, Modest Mouse, Mecca Normal, Lois, Some Velvet Sidewalk, Mirah, Microphones and Old Time Relijun during its 35-year history.

Johnson’s latest album was released last year under the name Selector Dub Narcotic. The album, “This Party Is Just Getting Started,” is a collaboration with Pacific Northwest hip hop producer Smoke M2D6, called an “exercise in ecstatic genre-smashing, blending and up-ending.”
