Fire leads to delays on Metro-North railroad

GREENWICH (AP) — A fire inside a switching control house in Greenwich is causing delays along the New Haven line of the Metro-North commuter railroad.

Railroad officials say the fire late Sunday destroyed equipment that allows the railroad to switch among the four tracks.

As a result, only two tracks are available westbound between Stamford and Port Chester, New York for the morning rush hour. And only two tracks will be available eastbound in the afternoon. Officials normally use three tracks in the peak travel direction.

Officials say that will result in delays of about 10 minutes along the line until the problem can be fixed. They say that is a highly complex process, and a manual control panel is expected to take weeks to install.
