Meriden soprano hopeful for future after Met competition

MERIDEN — Meriden native Gabriella Reyes de Ramirez was slightly nervous before stepping in front of over 4,000 people at the Metropolitan Opera on Sunday, but as she took the stage her nerves melted away.

“I was as calm as can be. I was ready. I was in the zone and I went out there and I shared a story with those arias that I sang,” Reyes de Ramirez said. “If I had a time machine and could have done it all over again, I wouldn’t have changed a thing. I felt like I gave it my all and did the best I could.”

Although Reyes de Ramirez was not among the winners in Sunday’s prestigious Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions in New York City, the 24-year-old said she could not be more grateful for the experience, which she hopes will propel her opera career forward.

Reyes de Ramirez graduated from Maloney High School in 2010 .

She won the New England regional competition earlier this month before advancing to the final last week .

On Sunday, Reyes de Ramirez performed “Cristobal Es esta luz la Muerta,” by Daniel Catán. The soprano’s “dramatic voice and musicality rose with Catán’s score, scaling back after each climax to begin the climb to the next,” noted

Ramirez will still take home a $5,000 runner-up prize. While disappointed she was not named one of the six winners, Ramirez said she was grateful for the experience.

“It was a little painful not to win, but you know I feel incredibly proud and honored, humbled to be on that stage with the Met orchestra,” Reyes de Ramirez said. “It was really a transcending experience.”

The up-and-coming opera singer will perform in Mozart’s “The Marriage of Figaro” at the Boston University Opera Institute in April and plans to travel to Europe to study languages over the summer.

“No matter what I think I have a big chance of making a career out of this,” Reyes de Ramirez said. “I still have the world ahead of me.” 203-317-2231 Twitter: @LeighTaussRJ
