MERIDEN — A squirrel caused a power outage at a Center Street substation Thursday morning, leaving over 1,500 city homes and businesses without electricity for about an hour.

Fire crews were dispatched to the substation near the intersection of Center Street and Sherman Avenue about 10:42 a.m. after receiving reports of a loud bang and smoke.

As of 10:50 a.m., there were 1,532 reported power outages in Meriden, about six percent of Eversource Energy customers in the city. The utility responded and restored power within an hour, according to company spokesman Mitch Gross.

City resident Mary Bunch, who lives next to the substation, said she heard a loud noise and sparks at the substation before she lost power.

“There was a big old boom,” Bunch said.
