MERIDEN — A city man faces charges after police say he crashed a car into a utility pole on Coe Avenue Monday morning and fled the scene.

Clayton Bacchus, 38, of 16 Prince St., was charged Monday with driving under the influence, evading responsibility, failure to maintain proper lane and operating under suspension. His bond was set at $15,000.

The crash occurred about 6:20 a.m. in the area of 19 Coe Ave., just east of Bradley Avenue, said Sgt. Darrin McKay. A witness gave police a description and officers located Bacchus a short time later on Oregon Avenue. He was taken into custody and refused to take field sobriety tests.

A portion of Coe Avenue was closed while the utility pole was repaired.
