MERIDEN — A city man faces charges after police say he struck a building on Foster Street early Sunday and drove off.

Justin Diaz, 27, of 24 Wood St., second floor, was charged with driving under the influence, reckless driving, evading responsibility and weapon in a motor vehicle. He was also cited for failure to maintain lane, possession of less than half an ounce of marijuana, unregistered motor vehicle and minimum insurance.

Police responded to Foster Street at about 3 a.m. for a report of a car that clipped the corner of a building, Sgt. Darrin McKay said. There were signs of damage to the building, along with tire marks on the sidewalk and road. Witnesses gave a description of the vehicle and an officer found Diaz in a car nearby, severely intoxicated and uncooperative, McKay said.

Diaz failed field sobriety tests and refused a breathalyzer test, McKay said. Officers found a hatchet and multi-tool with blade in his car along with less than a half gram of marijuana, McKay said.

Diaz was released on $15,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Meriden Superior Court on Sept. 1.
