Murder charges are pending against a Waterbury man police say shot and killed a 25-year-old Berlin man at the Days Inn on the Berlin Turnpike early Sunday morning.

Rahheem McDonald, 37, was in custody Monday on unrelated charges following a crash Sunday in North Haven. He’s the subject of an active warrant in the shooting death of Pratikkumar Jagani, state police said. The warrant charges McDonald with murder, criminal possession of a firearm, possession of a firearm without a permit and possession of a high capacity magazine. Bond has been set at $2 million.

Berlin police contacted state police about 3:30 a.m. Sunday asking for assistance after a body was found at the Days Inn, 2387 Berlin Turnpike, state police spokeswoman Trooper Kelly Grant said in a statement. No arrests were made at the scene.

About 25 minutes later, McDonald was driving on Hartford Turnpike in North Haven and crossed the center line, colliding head-on with an oncoming car, according to North Haven police Captain Kevin Glenn. The other vehicle rolled over and two people inside were sent to a local hospital for treatment. McDonald fled the scene on foot, but “reappeared” as officers were searching for him, Glenn said.

McDonald was taken into custody and told police he was under the influence of PCP, Glenn said. He was also taken to a hospital for treatment. Police also discovered McDonald was in possession of a stolen firearm, Glenn added.

He was charged with driving under the influence, second-degree assault with a motor vehicle, evading responsibility, criminal impersonation, theft of a firearm, weapon in a motor vehicle, criminal possession of a firearm, possession of a firearm while intoxicated and suspended license. He was arraigned in Meriden Superior Court on Monday.

Judge Corinne Klatt set bond for the North Haven incident at $200,000 and continued the case to July 17.
