This is not a bad dream or a TV show. It’s Forbidden Escape, located at 442 East Main St. in Plainville.
Featuring “The Basement” room, Forbidden Escape, was created by Southington natives, and siblings David Martin and Susan Peters. The business opened to the public on July 8.
Escape rooms offer various themes and storylines that may involve horror, outer space settings, hostage situations, prison break outs, and treasure hunting.
“The Basement” escape room is a “haunted theater.”
According to Martin, escape rooms have been around for more than 10 years and have become quite popular in Connecticut.
There are two established escape rooms in nearby Farmington and Berlin, and Martin sees this as a positive thing. “At the moment, there is no competition, as each escape room is different, bringing the game to those that would not have heard of it before,” he said. “If you try one, you are likely to try another one.”
Martin said many escape room enthusiasts make it a goal to try every escape room they can get to.
Forbidden Escape has seen a wide array of visitors, ranging from teenage couples on a date, to mother-daughter teams, to a group of male friends in their 40s out for a guys’ night.
Escape rooms are also popular with companies, as they foster team-building and problem-solving.
“You have to multi-task in this game,” Peters explained. “More pairs of eyes is a good thing. While someone works on a puzzle, someone else is looking for more clues, while a third person could be assisting either one.”
The quickest that any group has made it out of the “Basement Room” was 48 minutes.
Another room at Forbidden Escape – “The Backstage” – is expected to open this month.
“The second room will be a continuation of our storyline from the basement,” Peters said. “‘The Backstage’ will have a lighter and brighter atmosphere. Our puzzles will continue to be unique, but as the basement has a higher difficulty level, this one will be a bit different, yet still very challenging.”
