SOUTHINGTON — Two local schools briefly took added security measures Tuesday morning after a black bear was spotted near Spring Lake.

DePaolo Middle School and Hatton Elementary school were placed in “secure school mode” but returned to normal operations about 10 a.m., School Superintendent Tim Connellan said in a statement.

Parents were notified in an email, Connellan said. The bear was last seen moving east toward Rogers Orchards.

“Hopefully spring will not bring with it more bear sightings,” Connellan said.
