State police charge 39 with DUI over holiday weekend

State police responded to over 300 crashes over the holiday weekend and charged more than three dozen motorists with DUI.

Since Friday, state police have been conducting special patrols focusing on drunk driving, aggressive drivers, distracted drivers and speeders, including sobriety checkpoints.

According to statistics released Monday morning, state police responded to 304 reported crashes, 40 with injuries. There were no fatal crashes on highways reported.

Troopers charged 39 people with DUI, and issued 881 speeding tickets. In total, state police issued 1,895 moving infractions, which include unsafe lane change, following too closely and distracted driving.

During the same span last year, police responded to 315 accidents, two of which were fatal, and handed out 1,227 speeding tickets and a total of 2,913 moving violations. They also charged 39 people with DUI.
