Southington man faces armed robbery charges

SOUTHINGTON — A local man accused of robbing a gas station on Meriden-Waterbury Turnpike last month is being held on $150,000 bond.

Brett Downs, 31, was charged Friday with second-degree robbery and sixth-degree larceny.

Sgt. Jeffrey Dobratz, police spokesman, said Downs entered the Kaival Food Mart/Gulf Gas Station waving a carpet knife and ordered the clerk to open the cash register. Downs took the cash register, which contained about $180, and ran from the store.

Downs was arraigned in Bristol Superior Court Monday and is scheduled to appear again April 8.
