SOUTHINGTON – Hundreds of students at Derynoski School got outside Thursday morning as part of a Zumba event.

Over 600 students and faculty performed two Zumba exercises behind the school.

“We look forward to this every single year,” Principal Jan Verderame said.

The Zumba activity was set up through Activate Southington and the Southington YMCA in celebration of All Children Exercise Simultaneously Week.

Every May, children throughout the world take time out of their school day to do an exercise. All Southington elementary schools are taking part this week.

“We try to do things with Southington schools to really combat obesity, that has been our underlying goal throughout,” said Diane McNicholas-Botsacos, of Activate Southington. “Everything we do has to do with nutrition and being active and being the best that we can and being the healthiest Southington we can be.”

Leading up to the event, Verderame and the Derynoski faculty took time to promote exercise and good health.

“We have been talking about healthy living... and the children are finding ways to be healthier. Instead of opening up that iPad or (other) technology we want them to be outside getting energized,” she said.

Despite the hot weather, most of the students had a lot of energy during the Zumba exercises.

“They had a great time,” Verderame said. “We just had a dance-off over there, the 5th graders and myself and I think they won for sure.”
