Son charged with killing mother in Deep River, Conn.

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (AP) — Prosecutors allege that a Deep River man used a fire poker, buck knife and his hands to kill his mother.

Twenty-two-year-old Robert Owen Rankin was arraigned Friday in Middletown Superior Court. He is being held on a $1 million bond and is on a suicide watch.

The New Haven Register ( http://bit.ly/1ddGlmY ) cites state police affidavit in reporting that Rankin was arrested Thursday after his father called 911, telling authorities, “my son killed my ex-wife.” The name of the 45-year-old victim has not yet been released.

Police said Rankin confessed to the murder and showed no remorse or distress. He allegedly cut open his mother’s abdomen and began removing organs, saying he was “looking for a baby.”

The state medical examiner’s office will determine the manner and cause of death.
