Nurse sentenced to 23 years in rape of 3-year-old

VERNON — A nurse practitioner has been sentenced to 23 years in prison for raping a 3-year-old girl and attempting to arrange a sexual encounter with an 18-month old.

Jay Mohler-Avery of Hartford, who owned the Connecticut Family Care Center in Vernon, pleaded guilty Thursday in Tolland Superior Court to sexual assault, risk of injury to a minor and conspiracy to commit sexual assault.

He also entered a no contest plea to an insurance fraud charge. Prosecutors say he billed the state’s Medicaid program for a bogus medical appointment in October 2012, during which he tried to arrange a sexual encounter with the patient’s 18-month-old daughter.

Judge William Bright Jr. ordered Mohler-Avery to register as a sex offender and serve 20 years of special parole once his prison sentence is completed.
