2 boats destroyed, 4 damaged in marina fire

FAIRFIELD — Fire officials say two boats have been destroyed and four others damaged in a marina fire.

Officials say the fire broke out Sunday at the South Benson Marina in Fairfield.

When firefighters arrived, they saw a group of people trapped on a dock by the burning boats. Crews led them to safety.

No serious injuries were reported, but officials say a man who was working on a boat jumped into the water to escape the flames. The man suffered only minor cuts and declined medical care.

Officials believe a spark from an electric cord ignited gasoline vapors on one of the boats.

The estimated value of the two destroyed boats is more than $40,000. The extent of damage to the other boats has not yet been determined.
