Motorist tries to elude police; detective hangs on

MIDDLETOWN — A 23-year-old man has been arrested and charged with multiple offenses after he drove off with a police detective hanging from his car door.

Middletown Police say detectives stopped Joseph Nevico of Cromwell Tuesday for motor vehicle violations, but he wouldn’t get out of his car and drove off with a detective partly inside.

The detective tried to gain control of the car, but Nevico stopped and then sped forward again. Police say another detective pursued Nevico, who hit two parked cars. He was stopped by an officer in a cruiser who blocked the street. Police say Nevico struck the cruiser.

Nevico and the detective have been treated for minor injuries.

Nevico is being held on $500,000 bond on 11 charges. It wasn’t immediately known if he has a lawyer.
