The Quinnipiac River Watershed Association will hold its annual spring cleanup Saturday at locations along the river in several area towns.

“It’s a little bigger this year,” said QRWA President David James of the effort, which begins at 9 a.m. and ends at noon.

In Southington, volunteers managed by Shianne Cutler will meet at the Primus open space property off Farmstead Road. James is managing the cleanup in Meriden, where volunteers will meet at QRWA headquarters, 540 Oregon Road. The Meriden location will act as a staging and supply area for the entire cleanup effort.

Volunteers in Wallingford will meet south of Quinnipiac Street at Walco Park. Tim Nielsen is overseeing the Wallingford cleanup. Steve Theriault is leading a cleanup effort in North Haven, where volunteers will meet at the Toelles Road bridge at the Wallingford town line

Participants should bring boots or old sneakers, work gloves, trash bags and ropes, hand-saws or other tools if possible. Children are welcome but should be closely supervised by parents. Refreshments will be provided at noon.

James said when the annual cleanup began in the early 1980s, the effort often involved multiple towns. In recent years, the cleanup was more focused in the Meriden area. This year, enough people volunteered in surrounding towns to expand the effort, James said.

In Meriden, boats will be utilized. James said he doesn’t think boats will be involved in other locations.

“We will be in the water in Meriden — Hanover Pond, Harbor and Sodom Brook with waders,” he said.

A majority of the cleanup will take place on the banks of the river.

“We’re in the water or right along the banks,” he said.

James said the annual cleanup is important for a number of reasons.

“One is that no one else is doing it,” he said, adding that the cleanup also provides a chance for people to actively participate in improving their environment.

“Most of us doing this stuff, the volunteers, are local and they care about their community,” James said.
