WALLINGFORD — Sheehan High School senior Linus Koepfer is among 13 students in the state recently awarded a National Merit Scholarship.

On Wednesday, National Merit Scholarship Corp. announced the first group of winners in the 62nd annual National Merit Scholarship Program. According to a statement released by the organization, more than 1,000 high school seniors across the country were awarded scholarships financed by about 200 businesses and foundations.

Koepfer plans to study computer engineering in college. A National AP Scholar, he is one of 36 students in the world to earn a perfect score on the AP German Language and Culture exam. He has successfully taken the highest course offered in every discipline in addition to pursuing independent studies and online courses.

Through one of his independent studies, he produced an app for Android that is available from the Google Play app store.

Besides academic success, Koepfer is a varsity member of the cross country and tennis teams, drum major of the Sheehan marching band, plays various instruments in concert band, jazz band, and pit ensembles, and is a varsity choir singer. He further participates in school life through clubs and enrichment activities, such as mock trial, STEM club, Argentinean Exchange Program, JA Global Connections, and Chick-fil-A Leadership Academy.

Most of the awards are renewable for up to four years in college, and provide annual stipends from $500 to $10,000 per year. Some also provide a single payment between $2,500 and $5,000.

Funding for the scholarships is provided by corporate organizations from nearly all sectors of industry in the country. Koepfer’s scholarship was sponsored by 3M, a manufacturer with corporate headquarters in St. Paul, Minnesota. The company has a location on Research Parkway in Meriden.

“These scholarships, a part of 3M’s significant support to education, reflect the company’s strong belief that higher education is the key to providing qualified future leaders for our businesses, our communities, and our country,” according to a statement released by the company.
