Wallingford liquor store opens, grocery store planned next door

WALLINGFORD — A liquor store recently opened at the former Suburban Market after about a year of renovations. Owners say a grocery store will open next door early next year.

Owners Pratima and Prakash Patel purchased West Side Wine and Spirits, 8 Hope Hill Road, in May 2016 for $300,000. Renovations on the 12,650 square foot building began last August.

The site was the former home of Suburban Market and was owned by various members of the Vumbaco family, including former Wallingford mayor Rocco J. Vumbaco. Vumbaco sold Suburban Market in 1983, but retained ownership of the property.

The store closed more than 15 years ago.

“It was a bustling center of commercial viability years ago,” Town Councilor Craig Fishbein previously told the Record-Journal. “I think that’s a fantastic development for the Yalesville area.”

A grocery store will open next to the liquor store in 2018.

“It will be nice to see it take on new life,” Economic Development Specialist Tim Ryan previously told the Record-Journal.

The Patels also own The Liquor Mart, located at 612 S. Colony Road.
