WALLINGFORD — A Cheshire man and New Britain woman face charges after police said they were involved in a dispute at Walmart on Monday night. During the incident, a young child fell from a shopping cart and was taken to a local hospital for evaluation.

Tristan Pleines, 31, of 190 Nutmeg Place, Cheshire and Shelbia Herbig, 31, of 35 Cidermill Court, New Britain, were charged with risk of injury to a minor, third-degree assault and breach of peace.

Police responded to Walmart, 844 N. Colony Rd., about 10 p.m. for a report of a couple arguing and found Pleines and Herbig in the parking lot, according to a police report.

A witness reported he heard the couple arguing in the self checkout line and then saw a child, about 16 months old, fall to the ground, the report said. Another witness reported that Herbig and Pleines both attempted to hit each other.

Security video showed Pleines and Herbig arguing at the checkout and the child fall out of the shopping cart, the report said.

Herbig and Pleines were arraigned in Meriden Superior Court on Tuesday. A judge released Herbig on a promise to appear in court on Oct. 6. Bond for Pleines was set at $35,000.
