WALLINGFORD — A local man was charged with sixth-degree larceny after police said he was caught stealing a package left on the front step of the town’s homeless shelter.

Larry Walter Levasseur, 50, of 63 North Cherry St., was arrested Sunday and released on $10,000 bond.

Police saw Levasseur carrying a large package on North Cherry Street about 7 p.m. and noticed a woman telling him to stop, according to a police report.

When questioned, Levasseur told police he took the package from the front step of the Wallingford Emergency Shelter, 123 Quinnipiac St., the report said.

He is scheduled to appear in Meriden Superior Court on Sept. 18.
