LETTERS: Nury Chavarria / President Trump / State Rep. Cathy Abercrombie

The father?

Have read several accounts regarding Nury Chavarria who was ordered out of the country 19 years ago but kept getting postponements. Nowhere have I found any mention of the father of her four children. If it is not too rude to ask, how does he fit into the picture?

When art imitates life

A 1957 movie still worth seeing is “A Face in the Crowd” starring Andy Griffith. It is about a man named Larry “Lonesome” Rhodes who becomes popular on TV by playing a character. People are fooled by him. He becomes better and better at manipulating people and begins to see political ramifications. He becomes a megalomaniac, obsessed with this own power.

Near the end of the film he proclaims “the whole country is just like my flock of sheep. Rednecks, crackers, hillbillies, house fraus, shut-ins, pea pickers; everybody who has got to jump when somebody else blows the whistle — they’re mine. I own them. They think like I do — only they’re more stupid than I am, so I gotta think for them. They’re like a cage full of guinea pigs, stupid idiots, miserable slobs. They’re a lot of trained seals — I toss them a dead fish and they’ll flap their flippers.” Shocking, after all these years the present occupier of the White House and his supporters parallel the thoughts and actions of what is going on today. He lies, then changes his story and they swear to it.

Failing the people

Democrat state Rep. Cathy Abercrombie says “it doesn’t do anyone any good” if a state budget bill only gets passed in one chamber. (“Suzio leads budget rally on Meriden Green,” July 21.)

Maybe this was Abercrombie’s reasoning for leaving the country last month instead of doing the job she was elected to do and showing up to the state Capitol for the June 29 special session. Hey, it’s a laughably weak reason, but at least it’s a reason. Rep. Abercrombie: Do your job and stop failing the people who elected you.
