What ails the mail? Businesses cite lateness

MERIDEN - Almost four months after mail delivery to Speed Print, at 1232 E. Main St, became irregular, owner Tom Aresco says the problem shows no sign of abating.

"Last week I think I got mail once," he said Monday. "Usually it's once or twice a week."

The carriers are showing up at his door, but not till 7 or 8 p.m., long after the shop closes, which means crucial business correspondence isn't getting through. The carriers arrive to find Aresco's door closed, so they add that mail to the next day's delivery, but even then, it doesn't get delivered the next day unless they happen to get to his door before 5 p.m.

The post office reduced the number of carrier routes in the city in early August from 56 to 48 as part of a plan to improve efficiency and lower costs. Administrators warned of several days of delays, but residents and businesses are still receiving mail late in the day or not at all.

Last year around this time most carriers would have finished their routes by 4:30 or 5 p.m., around sunset, said Paul Daniels, president of the National Association of Letter Carriers, Connecticut Merged Branch 20, which represents the carriers. But this year, mail carriers, their numbers reduced, are trudging around in the dark.

Deborah Frederick, a member of the Meriden Postal Employees Safety Committee, sent a letter to the Record-Journal last week asking residents to leave their lights on and clear sidewalks and walkways of hazards so carriers can make their late deliveries.

"They don't have enough help," Daniels said. "We wouldn't be delivering this late if the routes were properly adjusted."

The union is fighting to get the post office to reinstate some of the routes, and one was restored in September.

With local businesses still suffering, the Greater Meriden Chamber of Commerce urged its members to contact the post office with their problems.

"We continue to learn of delivery issues with the United States Postal Service in Meriden," wrote chamber President Sean W. Moore in an e-mail sent to members.

U.S. Postal Service spokeswoman Maureen Marion said business people experiencing problems with mail delivery should contact Eileen Kelty, manager of post office operations, at (203) 235-5755.

"We continue to make modifications and adjustments," Marion said Monday. "Both the district leadership and the union are in conversation, and there will be a sit-down [meeting] by the second week of December. We'll look at how we're doing and look at the minor changes we need to move ahead."

The union claims its attempts to offer advice have previously been ignored by the post office, and Daniels did not want to comment on the upcoming meeting.

Marion said the meeting is not a dramatic shift of policy for the postal service but an opportunity to "clear the air and break some new ground, and to look at what we need to do to work forward."

While there are still dissatisfied residents and merchants, Marion said the silent majority is being served well, and that many of the original problems have been solved.

"We've still got pockets that are problematic, and I encourage them to be part of the solution" by contacting Kelty, she said. "But the problems have, for many reasons, subsided."

Why worry about facts?
There have been no management bonuses for years. They get less of a raise then the craft. This is not counting the PCES(exectutives) who make lots and lots of money. You all have such great ideas and the anwers to all the problems, why don't you join managemment and correct what you see? If you're not part of the solution you are part of the problem.

Late Mail
Hey judy you sound just like my PM. YOU ALL SWEAR WE ARE STEALING FROM THE PO. WELL IF YOU ALL KNEW HOW TO ADJUST ROUTES PROPERLY, WE WOULDN'T BE OUT THERE UNTILL AFTER DARK. DO YOU REALIZE HOW DIFFICULT IT IS. TRY IT SOMETIME AND LET US KNOW IF YOU CAN WORK AS QUICKLY AND EFFICIENTLY AS IN THE SUNLIGHT.

Those days are gone. There is no mail to sort at the end of the day. It all should have been delivered. Mail isn't sorted at local Post Offices, very minimal anyway. It is sorted by machines at a Distribution Facility(Plant) and arrives in the morning for that days delivery. Effective Dec 1, 2008. No Mail Carriers will be asked to come in on their day off to help cover staff shortage. The additional workload will be absorbed by the on duty Carriers who will carry on multiple routes.

Postal Poo
The Posxt Office suffers from GROSS MISMANAGEMENT!!! There is a glut of white collars to the ratio of 1 to every 10 craft employees, UPS has 1 to 50 & Fed-ex has 1-100 (no wonder they show profits). The Post Office basis it's Bonus system on cost cutting numbers, the current prize is cutting delivery staff & routes. I to started 30 years ago at 6am, delivered & even had time to cover sick calls or emergencies all before dark. Now I start at 8am and hurry up to just stay behind. Contact your Congressman or woman, do not notify the rats who are minding the cheese. They are the ones who ordered the chaos.

why ?
why should a business have to put up a mailbox? so we can deliver it at 7pm and it sits there all night in the box so someone can come by and steal it?
Also if you dont work in the Meriden station, you really souldnt comment on whats going on and calling carriers lazy,if you knew half of the stuff thats going on in the office you would laugh you butt off

THINGS HAVE DEFINATELY CHANGED
Things have definately changed over the last 10 years I have carried. We used to start at 5:45 at my P.O. and try to get out by 8:00, most of the mai was sector segmented. Averaged 6 feet of mail per day and less than 20 packages. Got back at around 2:00 P.M. Now, for less evaluated hours, we start at 6:45 and get out by 9:30, approx. 1/2 of the mail is raw, 1/2 DPS. Now average 10 feet of mail and 40 packages 2x the boxholders and certifieds. Get back at 3;30 P.M. We are told volume is down but we are given bigger buggies to push the increased volume to our vehicles. That (volume down) is incorrect in our area. 1st class is down but the junk mail, boxholders, accountables and packages are way up. I think that much of our problem is with our price structure, not our volume. When I see a large amount of letters going through for $,08 and we keep raising 1st class postage which per management is our "bread and butter" you have to wonder who is putting together our business model.

"Why don't the mail carriers sort at the end of their shift for delivery first thing next day? Then they would be able to get to everyone while it is still light out." Then the mail would be a day late EVERY day.

Carriers are not the problem
Carriers are not the problem, nor are the other crafts. The postal service is running in the red so to speak. PMG Potter wants the public to believe its due to the high cost of labor and fuel, but in fact its mostly due to poor spending and wasting money by upper managment. Just last year PMG Potter gave himself approx. a 70,000. raise. Along with 10 other top USPS executives, that received big raises. About 3 weeks ago the Ct district held a state wide meeting, for managment, at Mountainside in Wallingford Ct. All expenses paid by the USPS (food &drink). When the USPS has a perfectly good conference center in the Brewery Street that could of accommodated managment for zero cost. This is just the tip of the iceberg of managment wasting money. So I say to you the public, don't blame your carrier or the guy/gal working all night trying to process your mail. Those employees are the ones doing all the sacraficing. The blame falls on the fat cats on top. The ones who are bleedeing the system for every penny they can get.

The real problems
In every article I read, the Postal spokesperson always responds with the same govt. rhetoric and run around. The truth of the matter is they are ALL inept. The Postal Service is NOT a legitimate business. Legitimate business's that succeed are run by PROFESSIONALS with FORESIGHT and WORK ETHIC. The Postal Service lacks all of the aforementioned. They PO has a monopoly and STILL fails...what is this indicative of???

When middle and upper management is RIFE with redundancy, bloated and uneducated, there is no way for the business being run by those to succeed. And since there is no legitimate oversight, managements arrogance and ignorance towards customers and employees will continue to fester like the cancer they continue to facilitate. The Postal Service ONLY cares about it's image.
