Councilor picked for statewide panel

SOUTHINGTON — Dawn Miceli was recently appointed to a state board that has the task of distributing funding for the preservation of open space, farmland, affordable housing and historic preservation. Miceli is a town councilor, member of the Open Space and Land Acquisition Committee, and advocate for the renovation of the town-owned Gura Building for use as an arts center.

House Democratic Majority Leader Joe Aresimowicz, who represents Berlin and Southington, appointed Miceli to be part of the Face of Connecticut Steering Committee, which has 12 members.

“It’s something very near and dear to my heart,” said Miceli, a Democrat.

The steering committee, created in 2008, also works with the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection commissioner to create grant programs for preservation projects, according to the state General Assembly website.

Aresimowicz said in a statement that he couldn’t “imagine a better person” than Miceli for the board.

“I’m confident that the passion, commitment and leadership she has repeatedly demonstrated in Southington will now be put to good use for our whole state,” Aresimowicz said.

On the Open Space committee, Miceli said she is establish goals for how much land should be preserved in town.

Ed Pocock Jr., who serves on the open space committee with Miceli, said she is always looking for ways to preserve land.

“She’s a dynamic person and I could understand why they appointed her,” said Pocock, a Republican.
