Southington man facing animal cruelty charges

SOUTHINGTON — A local man charged with animal cruelty is due to appear in Bristol Superior Court today.

Christopher Gagnon, 24, was arrested Oct. 19 and also charged with breach of peace.

Sgt. Jeffrey Dobratz, police spokesman, said Gagnon was arrested on a warrant for an Aug. 29 incident. A witness told police they found a lethargic cat wearing a leash in distress near Gagnon’s home, Dobratz said. A witness saw Gagnon swing the cat back and forth by its leash and then throw the cat on the grass. The witness also reported that Gagnon sprayed the cat in the face with a garden hose for about five minutes.

Gagnon told police he came home from work and found the cat injured, bloody and covered in feces so he “gave it a bath,” Dobratz said.

Southington Animal Control took the cat to a local animal hospital, Dobratz said. An examination showed the cat suffered trauma to its muzzle, ear and tail. After the exam, the cat was returned to its owner, who is an acquaintance of Gagnon.

Gagnon was released on a $500 bond.
