MERIDEN - The Silver City duals were good for both local wrestling teams, especially for the host school.
Platt won Saturday's round-robin style tournament by a tie-breaker over Maloney as both schools won their respective pools with come-from-behind wins in the final matches.
The two schools didn't face off in the crossover round for first place since they will wrestle each other on Feb. 10. Instead, Platt faced Conard, the second place team in Pool A, while Maloney tangled with Hall, the second place team in Pool B. Total points determined the winner between the two Meriden schools with Platt taking the title, 129-117.
Hall finished third and Conard finished fourth despite wins for both West Hartford teams in the crossovers. All four schools finished the day at 2-1.
The Panthers came close to an undefeated title but lost the final match against Conard by major decision, 10-1 on a takedown with about 12 seconds remaining. The loss gave the Chieftains a 37-36 win. Luis Rios had just given Platt a 36-33 lead with a major decision (14-3) in the previous match, at 130.
Rios was one of three Panthers named to the all-tournament team, along with Jose Alvarez and Erik Francks.
"It came down to the wire," Platt coach Bryan McCarty said. "We had big leads at 103 (an 8-0 major decision by Tyler Riberio) and 130 (Rios) but couldn't get the pins. Give them credit; that was some top competition. Conard came into the tournament with 15 wins."
Platt also got a major win from Juan Velasquez (10-2 at 189) and pins by Mike Carrero at 160 and Jose Alvarez at 112.
The narrow Platt loss meant that Maloney just needed to get a win over Hall in their crossover final to win the tournament. Despite a pin by Angel Vega at 112, a win by Alex Tresselt at 119 and a forfeit, the Spartans couldn't overcome an early 30-6 disadvantage and fell in the crossover, 45-27.
Raphael Dominguez (171) and Miguel Garcia (130) also won by pin and both were named to the all-tournament team.
Maloney won the Pool A title in a shocking come-from-behind win over Conard.
The Chieftains had defeated Maloney, 51-27 in December and it looked like more of the same as Conard took a 20-0 lead on Saturday. Ryan Larsen worked back to earn an 11-8 win at 160 to start a Spartan run as Maloney came all the way back for a 30-29 lead after a forfeit at 119. Jessie Davis (189), Bimael Acevado (215) and Tresselt (112) earned pins and Dominguez (171) won by a 9-7 decision during the run.
"It's a benefit when you wrestle a team twice in the same season," Maloney coach Joe Ferriera said. "We knew that if we kept it close through the bigger weights that we had good matchups lower. Those pins at 189 and 215 were really unexpected."
Ferriera was also helped by the forfeit at 119.
"I bumped everyone up a weight because of the forfeit," the Spartans coach said. "It allowed me to set up Miguel (Garcia) at 130. He's been a leader all year; it's exactly where we wanted to be."
Conard took the lead back with a 5-1 decision at 125, setting up the decisive match at 130, which Garcia dominated in a 5-0 decision to give Maloney the pool championship.
Platt earned the Pool B championship in much the same way with an even more amazing run against Hall.
Trailing 35-3, Platt had to win its six remaining matches, with at least four by pin. A forfeit at 285 helped and then the final five wrestlers did their part, earning four pins and a major decision.
Riberio, Alvarez, Francks and Rios all won by pin and Alex Lopez took the major by a 9-1 score. The Panthers bench erupted as the referee's hand hit the floor giving Rios the pin and Platt the pool championship.
"That's our biggest comeback," McCarty said. "We're a streaky team and the guys feed off of each other. When we needed wins, those three (all-tournament selections Alvarez, Rios and Francks) came through big."
Maloney and Platt will have the opportunity to determine which is the better team when they face off in two weeks. The Silver City trophy is on the line according to McCarty, its current holder, who insists he would hand the trophy over if Maloney beats his squad.
Stay tuned.
