MERIDEN — Double-threat Alex Hunter ran for two touchdowns and tossed two more in the first half as Bristol Eastern rolled to a 49-0 victory over Maloney on Friday night at Falcon Field.
The Lancers (5-1, 1-1) took immediate control of the CCC Division II West contest, leading 35-0 at the half.
Maloney (1-4, 0-2) could muster only two first downs in the opening half and its no-huddle offense was out-gained 312-31 in opening 24 minutes of action.
“We did a great job upfront,” Eastern coach Michael Archangelo said. “They didn’t get any movement. No-huddle works really well when they are moving the ball, and they weren’t having much success moving the ball.”
The Bristol squad set the tone by taking the opening kickoff and marching on a 10-play, 70-yard drive that spanned just under half the quarter to take a 6-0 advantage. Hunter, who lined up as running back in the first quarter, ran a sweep to the left on a fourth-and-6 untouched for a 30-yard TD run.
Three plays after a Maloney 3-and-out, Eastern running back Gerry Ouellette (18-148) was in the end zone with on a 13-yard stroll that made the score 14-0.
On the second play of the second quarter, Hunter took a direct snap from a Wildcat formation and dove in for the 2-yard plunge, giving Eastern a 21-0 advantage.
With the big edge, Eastern tried its hand at taking to the air. Hunter connected on long TD passes to Ken Smith (70 yards) and Jozef Hermann (42) to balloon the Lancer advantage to 35-0 at the break.
In the third, Eastern QB Tommy Curtin tossed a 26-yard TD pass to Smith that made the score 42-0. Roderick Green scampered into the end zone in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter to finish off the scoring.
Maloney coach Pierce Brennan said his defense couldn’t get off the field.
“They lean on you and we weren’t mature enough to stick our nose in there and force them off the field,” Brennan said. “It’s tough when you can’t get off the field.”
Maloney quarterback Chris Dingwell was under plenty of pressure in his first varsity start.
Brennan said his team continues to fight.
“What we put these kids through since June 23, they are not falling apart,” Brennan said. “They are not going anywhere. We are proud of what we are doing. We are doing it the right way and we are not going anywhere. We will get there. It’s just going to take time.”
