Late long-distance strikes sink Sheehan

WALLINGFORD — Sheehan held Shelton sharpshooter Patrick Murphy without a field goal for most of Friday night’s SCC Housatonic boys basketball game.

Not long enough.

Murphy was twice left alone in the waning minutes and he twice made the Titans pay with 3-pointers that put the Gaels ahead. Sheehan had two cracks from beyond the arc in the final seconds, but came up empty, allowing Shelton to leave town with a 55-52 victory.

With the win, Shelton (6-3, 3-0) moved into a tie with Cheshire (5-3, 3-0) atop the Housy standings. Mike Davis finished with 19 points for the Gaels.

Sheehan slid to 5-5overall and 1-2 in the division despite a game-high 22 points from Tommy Laydon, who hit five 3-pointers along the way.

Brandon Rentas added 10 points. Mike Tiedemann had nine.

Amity 51, Lyman Hall 35: Trevor Biel scored 11 points and Chris Ames had 10, but the Trojans fell to Amity in an SCC Housatonic contest in Wallingford.

David Ryan led all scorers for the Spartans (3-6, 1-2 Housy) with 16 points. Ethan Smith had 10.

The Trojans are now 2-8 overall and 0-4 in the division.

Classical Magnet 75, Wilcox Tech 59: Classical built a 40-20 lead by halftime, then weathered a fierce Wilcox rally in the third quarter to notch the CSC crossover victory in Meriden.

The Indians pulled to within seven by the closing seconds of the third frame and had a chance to cut it closer. Instead, they turned the ball over twice and Classical capitalized to extend its lead back to 11.

Timmy Flynn belted out a game-high 32 points for the Hartford squad (3-4). Leroy Collier kicked in 13.

Jack Berryman scored a season-high 21 points to lead Wilcox (6-4). Roosevelt Shider had 20.
