Linehan takes Southington reins

SOUTHINGTON — For the first time in 13 years, a new face will be heading the sidelines of the Southington High School girls soccer team.

Southington Athletic Director Eric Swallow announced Thursday that Mike Linehan will be the Blue Knights’ new coach.

“Mike brings a lot of experience as a former Division I player,” Swallow said. “He’s coach at almost every level, youth through amateur. He is an educator and a trainer.”

Linehan suited up on the pitch for the University of Hartford. He coached in the Connecticut Junior Soccer Association and has a United States Soccer Federation National Coaching license.

He is also a Southington resident.

Swallow said Linehan will be a great fit for the Blue Knights.

“Mike is a highly positive motivational type of coach,” Swallow said. “He is a student of the game and his players will react well to his coaching methodology. That will be reflected well on the student athletes.”

Linehan could not be reached for comment Thursday. He replaces Sal Penta, who recently resigned after serving as the Southington coach for 13 seasons. Penta compiled a 140-66-24 record that included a co-state championship in 2002.
