No. 1 Blue Knights roll into quarters

SOUTHINGTON — Junior Kendra Friedt twirled a three-hit shutout Tuesday as top-seeded Southington cruised to a 13-0 victory over No. 17 Newtown in the second round of the CIAC Class LL softball tournament.

Friedt walked two and fanned six as she and the Blue Knights improved to 21-0 overall.

The right-hander got plenty of support from her offense. Southington struck for three runs in both the first and second innings and later capped it off with a six-run sixth.

The Blue Knights got all 17 of their players in the game. They were led by Natalie Wodolowski. The sophomore first baseman went 4-for-4 and drove in seven runs with two doubles, a triple and a single.

“Natalie was unstoppable,” Southington coach Davina Hernandez said. “Her first hit was on a squeeze bunt and she just kept going.”

Senior shortstop Sydney Ferrante went 2-for-3 with a double and a triple. She scored three runs and drove in two.

Haley Messenger, Lauren Zazzaro and Rachel Dube also added to the Southington attack. Zazzaro scored four runs.

Southington will remain home to play neighboring Cheshire, the No. 8 seed, in Thursday’s quarterfinals.

Newtown saw its season end at 13-8.
