South Meriden still kicking in states

ROXBURY — The South Meriden 44 baseball club won the consolation semifinal of the Connecticut Cal Ripken 50/70 State Tournament and is now two wins away from a state crown.

South Meriden walked off with a 4-3 victory over Stratford on Thursday night.

Matt Costello scored the winning run when Stratford made an error on a ground ball by Wes Deno in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Costello, along with going 2-for-3 at the plate, earned the win on the mound. He went the distance and yielded two hits, three walks and three runs.

Deno, E.J. Dudley and Marissa Gonzalez added hits for South Meriden, which will play Newtown tonight at 6 p.m.

If the 44’s win, they will play for the state title on Saturday.
