WEDNESDAY SCHOLASTICS: Sea of Blue as Knights glide in season opener; You the man for Wilcox XC; Spartan spikers rally

SOUTHINGTON — The Southington girls swimming team won its home opener at the Southington YMCA on Wednesday with an 88-74 CCC interdivisional victory over E.O. Smith.

Southington improved to 2-0 on the season.

Coach Evan Tuttle’s squad had a trio of double-winners: Andie Nadeau, Meghan Hammarlund and Olivia Fournier.

Nadeau was tops in the 200 and 500 freestyles with times of 2:07.40 and 5:51.51.

Hammarlund took the 200 IM (2:24.94) and the 100 free (59.03). Fournier doubled in the 50 free (25.26) and 100 backstroke (1:08.94).

Also posting individual victories for the Blue Knights were Maddie Symecko in the 100 butterfly (1:10.59) and Julie Duszak in the 100 breaststroke (1:11.58).

Symecko and Duszak teamed with Hammarlund and Fournier to open the meet with a first-place finish in the 200 medley relay (1:57.20). Symecko, Duszak and Hammarlund later joined forces with Jess Monte on the winning 200 free relay (1:51.21).

A sign-off victory from Nadeau, Anny Moquete, Julia Holland and Fournier in the 400 free relay (4:10.64) gave Southington a sweep of the relays.

Boys soccer

Daniel Hand 2, Sheehan 1: Patrick Christensen headed in a corner off the foot of Matthew Marquis to give Sheehan a 1-0 advantage in the 31st minute before the unbeaten Tigers scored two in the second half to earn the SCC Housatonic win at Riccitelli Field.

Nik Trivino made two saves in net for Sheehan (1-3, 0-2). Cole Finke made one stop for Hand (5-0, 2-0).

South Kent Prep 6, Cheshire Academy 0: John Poncy had a hat trick for South Kent (4-0). Owen Kempton had 16 saves for CA (0-4).

Girls soccer

Bullard-Havens 5, Wilcox Tech 2: Katie Kearney and Jailene Ruiz each scored for the Indians in this CTC tilt with the Tigers in Meriden. Tatiana Gonzalez assisted on both goals.

Wilcox dropped to 0-3-1 overall and 0-2-1 in conference play. Bullard-Havens is 2-1.

Boys cross country

Wilcox Tech 27, Platt Tech 30: The Indians improved to 2-0 on the season with a CTC victory at Hubbard Park. Junior Donny You was the overall winner. His time was 19:25. Also scoring for the Indians were Jared Rivera (2nd, 19:36), Israel Arce (4th, 20:33), Luis Hernandez (8th, 21:50) and Eric Wasman (12th, 23:05).

Girls cross country

Platt Tech 24, Wilcox Tech 31: Wilcox Tech freshman Shalyn Noble was the overall winner in the CTC race at Hubbard Park.

Maegan Griffin (4th, 28:07), Yamelette Calderon (7th, 29:49), Jian Chen (9th, 32:18) and Nyasia Gomes (10th, 32:19) rounded out the Indians’ scoring. Wilcox Tech is 0-2, Platt Tech 2-0.

Girls volleyball

Maloney 3, New Britain 2: The Spartans overcame a 2-1 deficit to earn a CCC crossover win in Meriden.

Game scores were 25-17, 21-25, 18-25, 25-18 and 15-11 as Maloney improved to 5-1. Highlighting the Maloney attack were Melanie Polanco (15 kills, 11 aces, 14 digs), Isabel Frazza (12 digs, 6 aces) and Anna Hendrickson (12 kills, 12 digs, 3 aces).

Shelton 3, Sheehan 2: Sydney Hunt blasted 14 kills and six aces and registered 10 digs, but the Titans could not put away the Gaels in this SCC crossover contest in Wallingford after leading two games to one. Game scores were 25-22, 22-25, 23-25, 25-22 and 15-12. Emily Musso added 15 digs as Sheehan fell to 3-2.

Wilbur Cross 3, Lyman Hall 0: The Trojans fell on their home court 25-16, 25-22 and 25-19. Avery LaChance had four kills and Shayna Sanders had four aces for LH (1-5). They both had seven digs.
