FRIDAY VOLLEYBALL: Dramatic rally for Wilcox under new coach; Platt & Lyman Hall take openers

MERIDEN — The Wilcox Tech girls volleyball team made new head coach Bryant Keith’s debut a memorable one, rallying to knock off North Branford 3-2 on Friday evening.

Down two games to one, the Indians stormed back in games four and five. It was a full swing from the opening set, which the Thunderbirds won handily.

Full game scores were 9-25, 25-23, 15-25, 25-15 and 15-7.

Yamileth Pebe, Nicole Tiezzi and Karina Torres led a strong team effort. Pebe and Torres both had 12 digs. Tiezzi had 20 assists.

Maloney 3, Berlin 0: The Spartans opened the season with the CCC South-Colonial sweep in Meriden, winning by game scores of 25-19, 26-24 and 25-10

Anna Hendrickson had a big night with 17 kills, nine digs and eight aces.

Melanie Polanco was also solid at all facets of the game. She had 10 digs, nine kills and eight aces.

Setter Carly Massicotte dished 28 assists and added two aces.

Platt 3, Middletown 0: The Panthers made a triumphant return to their home gym with the CCC South-Colonial sweep of the Blue Dragons.

Platt, which played all its games away from Oregon Road last year due to construction, rolled 25-6, 25-11 and 25-17.

Vanessa Isyk’s nine kills and seven aces fueled the winning attack. Isyk also had a eight digs. Lillian Montana matched those eight digs and also found the floor with six aces.

Kiara Lopez added six kills and four digs for Platt. Setter Caitlyn Hart posted 16 assists, five aces and five digs. Jennifer Rita was good for five digs and four aces.

The Panthers had 26 aces in all.

Southington 3, Hall 0: The Blue Knights steamrolled the Warriors in a CCC West-Colonial opener in Southington. Game scores were 25-14, 25-4 and 25-13.

Six kills from Brooke Cooney and five from Erica Bruno led the attack. Nolyn Allen had a team-high 10 digs on D. Steph Zera handed out 25 assists.

Lyman Hall 3, Hillhouse 1: The Trojans won their season opener at home, posting a 25-10, 25-23, 17-25, 25-10 SCC interdivisional victory over the Academics.

Nicole Albert had the touch for the Trojans. She served up nine aces while dishing out 12 assists. Albert also had three digs.

Avery Lachance notched a team-high eight kills for LH. Lachance also had three aces and two digs.
